Romans 13:8-101
8. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
You harmed our guests when you opened their gifts without their consent. The harm remains whilst you continue to withhold the gifts and refuse to return them to the guests, the lawful owners.
By acting as unauthorised intermediaries[^superior claim] rather than faithful trustees[^bare trustees] you:
- committed a fundamental breach of trust against the guests;[^relational harm]
- violated their right to privacy by intercepting personal communications;[^emotional harm]
- transformed our guestβs gesture of love into a forced deprivation of their assets, leaving them victimised by your interference.[^physical harm]
When you love Jesus you keep his commandments.2 The greatest commandment after loving God is to love your neighbour as yourself.3
You must first be reconciled with your brother before you come to God in worship.4 That means restoration of the gifts to each guest.
Clear instruction is given on how to provide restoration:
- Leviticus 6:2β55 restore the original stolen property to the lawful owners with an additional 20%, showing sincerity in repentance;
- Numbers 5:6β76 confess your sin;
- Ezekiel 33:14-167 do that which is lawful and right; application of the law in Leviticus 6:2-5.5 When this is not possible Proverbs 6:30β318 restore sevenfold in lieu of the original property.
Therefore, out of love for the guests you must return their gifts to them or their household as they were delivered to you, packaged, wrapped and carded, with an additional 20% of their value. For gifts not in their original condition, restore sevenfold.
When you do this you reconcile with the guests, and then may come before the LORD with clean hands9 in this matter, and abide in his love.10
1 John 2:411
4. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Obedience without love is just compliance; love without obedience is just applause.
With love and sincerity,
Bride
[^superior claim]: Superior Claim: Superior ownership rights always override the secondary claims of any temporary agent or middleman. To date you have not provided evidence that our guests lawfully transferred their gifts to you. Therefore by your acts of ownership, opening the gifts, writing on the cards, and discarding the cards, wrapping and packaging, you made an unlawful superior claim to the guestsβ property.
[^bare trustees]: Bare Trustees Purpose: To hold property on behalf of the beneficiaries. Powers: No discretion and no active duties other than to transfer the property to the beneficiaries when requested. Function: Merely the nominee of the beneficiaries.
[^relational harm]: Relational Harm: You have betrayed the trust they placed in you as custodians. Your refusal to deliver or return the gifts compromises the guestsβ relationships with both you and us, forcing them into a legal and social predicament they never consented to join.
[^emotional harm]: Emotional Harm: You have violated their privacy and stripped them of the joy of giving. You have placed distress and anxiety upon them knowing their personal gestures were intercepted and scrutinised by someone other than the intended recipients, turning their kindness into a source of conflict.
[^physical harm]: Physical Harm: You are in unlawful possession of their tangible property. By withholding these items, you are causing the guests a direct financial loss and depriving them of the use, value, and physical control of the assets they purchased.
