Proverbs 3:27–28 1
27. Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
28. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

We write to you with both concern and urgency, for we have repeatedly shown you the good that is required of you, yet it appears that you continue to resist doing that which is lawful and right. This action is not hidden from God,2 nor is it excusable before men.3

You have the power to act justly and restore the gifts to our guests or their households. Not doing so deepens the injustice,4 and dishonours the Lord who commands righteousness.5

Opportunity has been given to you, but when you turn away from it and don’t do the good that is within your reach, you despise both mercy and justice.6 7

This apparent neglect is not only against our guests, but against God. God is pleased with the sacrifice of doing good,8 yet to do justice is more acceptable than sacrifice.9

Our guests are due restoration, honour, and love. To refuse is to remain in debt, not only to the guests but to God’s law.10 Love fulfills the law, but refusal reveals a heart hardened against it.11 12

We continue to put you in remembrance of the good required of you. Refusal is not weakness but willful rebellion,13 and it is counted as sin before God.14 15

Justice is required. Mercy is commanded. Humility is the way of the Lord.16

Therefore, turn from your apparent stubbornness and walk in the light of obedience. Delay no longer, for each moment of refusal deepens guilt.17

Do that which is lawful and right:18

Sow righteousness now, lest you reap judgment later.21
